About Calisthenics
What Calisthenics Is
Calisthenics blends dance, gymnastics, strength, flexibility, musicality, and performance into one uniquely Australian sport. The word comes from the Greek kallos (beauty) and sthenos (strength) — a perfect reflection of the sport’s balance of athleticism and artistry.
Participants learn a series of choreographed routines and perform them on stage, either in non‑competitive classes or at competitions throughout the year. Calisthenics builds physical skills, confidence, teamwork, resilience, and lifelong friendships.
It is both a sport — developing coordination, discipline, stamina, and teamwork — and an artform, encouraging expression, creativity, musicality, and stagecraft.
What Participants Perform
Calisthenics includes a diverse range of items. Each routine develops different skills and contributes to the well‑rounded performer.
Figure March
Teams perform precise marching patterns that emphasise uniformity, rhythm, deportment, and teamwork. Complex floor patterns and formations showcase discipline and control.
Clubs
Performers swing wooden clubs in circular, rhythmic patterns with perfect timing and unison. Modern routines often include travelling steps, intricate swings, and coordinated team formations.
Free Exercises
A high‑energy routine combining strength, flexibility, control, and gymnastic elements. Teams perform strong, dynamic movements that test stamina, timing, and technique.
Rods
Similar to Free Exercises but performed with a metal rod that is manipulated throughout the routine. This item requires precision, rhythm, coordination, and consistent rod technique.
Dance Rods
A fusion of dance and rod work, combining expressive choreography with rod manipulation such as flashing and twists. Both elements must be balanced and performed by the minimum number of competitors.
Character / Folk Dance
A storytelling routine using dance steps, acting, and expressive movement. Teams portray characters or interpret traditional dances from around the world, focusing on rhythm, expression, agility, and theatricality.
Aesthetics
A graceful, balletic routine that emphasises softness, musical interpretation, fluidity, and expression. Performers use their whole body — including facial expression — to convey emotion and artistry.
Rhythmic
A more elevated, dance‑driven routine with roots in ballet and contemporary dance. It featuresballetic jumps, expressive movement, and strong dance technique, all performed with grace and musicality.
Rhythmical Aesthetics
A blend of Aesthetics and Rhythmic, combining graceful lines with elevated balletic steps. This routine highlights musical interpretation, fluidity, and refined dance technique.
Song with Action
Performed by younger age groups, this routine combines singing, acting, and choreographed movement. Teams tell a story through expressive gestures and clear vocal performance.
Song & Dance
A team of pupils present a routine that combines singing with modern dance jazz steps. Adjudicators place heavy emphasis on the quality of singing, presentation, style, facial expression and the correctness of dance steps.
Calisthenic Revue
A theatrical, high‑creativity routine that may include dance, singing, gymnastics, acting, comedy, and storytelling. Revue items often feel like mini stage productions and allow coaches significant artistic freedom.
Dance Arrangement
A routine based on a chosen dance genre, focusing on spatial awareness, elevation, expression, and performance quality. It showcases the team’s ability to interpret and embody a specific dance style.
